About Char Dham Yatra — Himalayan Pilgrimage
The Chota Char Dham of the Uttarakhand Himalayas, walked in the prescribed clockwise west-to-east order — Yamunotri (source of the Yamuna), Gangotri (source of the Ganga), Kedarnath (Shiva, the fifth Jyotirlinga) and Badrinath (Vishnu). The sequence is itself an act of devotion: first the two river-goddess sources, then Shiva, then Vishnu. Adi Shankaracharya is credited with reviving this Himalayan circuit in the 8th century to unify the faith. Each dham has its own reward — prasad cooked in Yamunotri's boiling Surya Kund, an icy dip in the newborn Bhagirathi at Gangotri, the highest of the Jyotirlingas after a 16 km trek at Kedarnath, and darshan of Badrinarayan beside the Tapt Kund hot spring and Mana village, the last settlement before Tibet. All four shrines open only for the summer season (around Akshaya Tritiya) and close by Diwali / Bhai Dooj, when the deities descend to their winter abodes. The yatra runs roughly May-October; the July-August monsoon is avoided for landslide safety. It takes about 10-12 days by road or 3-4 days with helicopter shuttles.
